Difference Between ICMAI, ICWAI, CWA and CMA
As discussed, ICAI offers the CMA course at three levels. CMA or Cost and Management Accountant was formerly known as Cost and Work Accountant (CWA). The institute offering the course remained the same from the initial stage. However, ICAI was then termed the Institute of Cost and Work Accountants of India (ICWA). ICWAI was later renamed the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants (ICMAI).
Thus, there is no difference between CWA and CMA. Both are the same courses, only the name has been changed in the previous years. Similarly, ICWAI, ICMAI, and ICAI are the same institute with changes in names over the years. Besides the nomenclature, there is no change in the literal meaning.
Three Levels of Cost and Management Accounting Course
As we all know, the CMA course consists of three levels- Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. The courses are designed to teach finance, accounting, law, management, etc.
CMA Foundation – It is the first level, where students will learn about the basics of Cost and Management accounting. The foundation level is 8 months. To clear this exam, you need to get at least 40%
marks.
CMA Intermediate – At this level, you’ll study Financial and cost accounts, and taxation at a deeper level. There are a total of eight papers divided into two groups.
CMA Final – It is the toughest stage of the Cost and Management Accounting course. Here, you’ll study various laws, cost and financial management, reporting, auditing and more in-depth.

Every student registered for the CMA course is required to undergo practical training for 3 years on a full-time basis in one organization mentioned in Appendix A and areas mentioned in Appendix B for reorganization.
CMA Course Duration
The total CMA Course Duration is 3 years. In these years, students must clear three CMA levels, which are Foundation, Inter and Final. The total 3 years are divided in CMA Foundation takes 8 months to complete, CMA Inter takes 10 months to complete and CMA Final takes 18 months to complete. After completing the all the level and exams you become a Cost and Management Accountant.
Furthermore, the graduate students will take at least 2.5 years, as they are exempted from the Foundation Level. So, B.com students will need a minimum of 2.5 years to become CMA.

CMA Course Eligibility Criteria
The minimum eligibility criteria for the CMA Course is 12th passed. Students must have 12th passed or graduated can be eligible for the CMA Course.
Students who have passed class 12th or graduated in any field other than fine arts or passed the Intermediate level of ICAI are eligible to apply for the CMA course.

- Diploma in Rural Service Examination under National Council for Higher Education.

CMA Course Fees after Graduation
The total CMA course fee after graduation is Rs. 48,100. It includes the Intermediate fees of Rs. 23,100 and the final fees of Rs. 25,000.
How to Register for the CMA Course?
All year round, CMA course registration is open for the ICAI courses. Further, candidates for CMA must register four
months before the proposed term. Candidates interested in the December term must register in July, while those
interested in the June term must do so by January 31 of that same year.

Registration for the CMA exams is always open, but students must fill out the registration form before the last dates. So, the last date to fill out the registration form for the June exams is Jan 31 and for the Dec exam is July 31.

ICMAI CMA Exam Pattern for All Three Levels
Before appearing in any of the exams of the CMA course, you must be aware of the exam pattern of each level. The exam pattern informs you about the questions expected in the exam, the time limit, the weightage of various chapters, and the type of questions. Each level is held twice annually.

CMA Foundation Exam Pattern & Passing Marks
According to the CMA Foundation exam pattern, each paper is of 100 marks and will last for three hours. The applicants will be given an additional fifteen minutes to review the CMA foundation question paper.
The question paper will comprise descriptive and objective problems. Further, the objective portion of the CMA Foundation carries 60%, and the subjective portion is 40%. Students will be required to split their time to complete the CMA foundation exam question paper on time. There is no negative marking in the papers.
To pass the CMA Foundation examination, students must get a minimum of 40 per cent on every examination subject and 50 per cent overall.
CMA Intermediate Exam Pattern & Passing Marks
There are a total of eight subjects at the CMA Intermediate level, divided into two groups. Each paper has 100 marks with three hours each.

How to get an Exemption in CMA Exams?
If a student can’t clear a group but gets 60+ marks in any of the papers in that group, then he will be exempted from appearing in that paper on the next attempt. However, to calculate the overall percentage in the next attempt, the marks of the exempted paper will be taken as 50.
Carry Forward Marks in CMA Exams
If a candidate can’t clear a group but gets 60+ marks in any paper and more than 40 marks in all the papers, then the marks of the exempted papers will be carried forward in the next attempt.
CMA Exam Admit Card
Usually, CMA releases the CMA exam admit cards a week before exams. The admit cards for CMA exams are accessible for online download from ICMAI’s official site.
It is mandatory for all students to carry the admit card in the examination hall. Otherwise, you will not

Students can do self-study for the CMA Foundation exams. But, for the CMA Inter and Final exams, we recommend students join good coaching, as the difficulty level of these exams is very high.
